Huge Coaching Night For Me

I’m in my first year back of coaching track after 14 years. My school is one of the smallest in the state, we do not have a track. I’m basically on my own with 30 athletes and I also coach the junior high team. I’m completely and utterly worn out from it all….but tonight proved it all to be worth it

Tonight at our district meet with 34 schools participating we won 3 different events to become district champions and we broke 3 district records in doing so. I had a discus girl seeded 14th but she whirled a personal best by 15 feet and qualified for the regionals out of nowhere. I had an 800 kid seeded 10th but he PR’d by 7 seconds to qualify out of nowhere.

One of the most satisfying nights of my life in sports.

I have been fortunate enough to feel a sense of accomplishment coaching a few times. Some were simple, some were complex. I never coached beyond the junior high level and have been coaching retired for almost 20 years.

Congrats on a huge accomplishment.

The next level that will make you smile is when a 35 or  40 year old man walks up to you and says  “hi coach!” You will lol at them and panic for a second and relief and joy will fill you when you recognize them. It is almost as much pure joy,

That’s awesome. It certainly helps out when all the time and sacrifice pays off. Enjoy it!

My wife coaches track and they had a freshmen girl run a 56.11 400m. I believe it’s the current top time in D2. They advanced a really solid 100/200 sprinter and very good 4x100 and 4x200 teams. They also went 1st/2nd in long jump. She’s excited to watch them compete at regionals next week. I think they have a chance at a team title.

Good luck to your athletes next week! Hoping I can see you/them in Dayton!

Are you guys D3? Any other events qualify?

Looking forward to checking things out at Dayton and seeing how they run it

We are small D3, one of the smallest.

I have a kid in the 1600 and 3200 (regional champ), another kid in the 800 and our 4x800

My 3200 kid is a state champ contender….he was going to skip the 1600 but has since decided to do both. I hope his 4:15 3rd place doesn’t keep him from winning it all in the 3200 but kid has worked like no kid I've ever seen. My 800 kid could go top 5…4x8 probably fall a bit short of podium. Our neighbor school has a kid that runs the 800 in 1:56 and they are all good buddies, would be state favorites with him.

Millbury Lake. D2.  Suburban Toledo area.

They have a 4x200 team, 100m, 200m, and 400m. Think all four events have shots at the podium.

Were hoping to get their 4x100 down but it was a tough/quick turnaround Saturday and the hottest it’s been for them all year.

Well…it was topped!

State Champion in the 3200 after clocking a 4:14 in the 1600 just 60 min prior. My 800 kid took 6th…my school, without a track, finished 7th in the team standings.
