Al would call for a boycot of Las Vegas, the media would compare the man to Hitler, the Hollywood types would trash him every change they got and all of the above would call for his impeachment from office. The authors also quote Obama's initial reaction to McCain's selection of a little-known governor: "Wow. Well, I guess she's change."
I find this funny! He acted like he has so much superior experience compared to her. But in fact, between the two of them, she's the one who had any sort of administrative experience. He had NONE.
The book also says Reid urged Obama to run, perceiving the first-term senator's impatience.
"You're not going to go anyplace here," Reid told Obama of the Senate. "I know that you don't like it, doing what you're doing."
I'm not sure if I totally understand this one. He was a senator for what... a year and a half or something? He didn't like it? What did he accomplish as senator?
Of course he isn't going to get anywhere in the senate after only a very limited time as a member and accomplishing jack-squat!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
And... people still say the word "negro"? That sounds so 50's to me.
But, I suppose it's better than Byrds "white n_____". :dodgy:
We the people have elected/hired a bunch of guttersnipes to our Congress! We have absolutely NOBODY to blame, but ourselves. We are reaping what WE have sown!

I agree with everyone that if this were someone deemed to be on the right, he would be fighting for his political career. This statement does not prove Senator Reid a racist. It does prove his arrogance. He is just one of many that look at those black folks that speak like they just stepped out of the hood, or white folks with a strong southern drawl, as uneducated imbeciles in need of their infinitely wise leadership. Now if Reid's arrogance is based on his belief that there are those incapable of ascending to his level of wisdom because of their genetic make up, then that would be a different story. For now we can only speculate as to the motives of Reid's arrogance.
Don't forget Hillary doing her best to imitate the so called "Negro dialect".

I'm skeptical he'll get as much of pass on this...One of the worst gaffes I can remember hearing...an unbelievable statement. (I still think Obama's "special olympics" gaffe might have been worse...and even the "left wing" media hammered him quite a bit for that...it was on t.v. constantly...although I thought it wouldn't have gone away as soon as it did).
I will watch the "state run media" to see if it is discussed and report back. Wish me luck. Pray that Katie Couric doesn't infect me with communist/marxist/anti-american/anti-country music ideals.

Gobuckeyes,
I would think that answer would be absolutely nothing or next to it, as far as domestic policy is concerned.
If it wasn't for Reid and Pelosi, the huge expansion of government health insurance probably would have never passed the idea stage.
They helped steamroll this thing, regardless of how good or bad it is perceived, and Obama can use that as a political "win".

It is getting to the point unfortunately where we can't just keep kicking the can down the road and someone is going to have to govern. We have major challenges that need to be addressed in the next 5 years or so, so for the sake of the country I hope you are wrong about nothing getting done. I don't want Reid/Pelosi solutions, but to think that doing nothing on any front is some how a good thing is just asking for trouble.

An interesting response from the current POTUS in 2002, in reference to the remarks made by Trent Lott:
"It seems to be that we can forgive a 100-year-old senator for some of the indiscretion of his youth, but, what is more difficult to forgive is the current president of the U.S. Senate (Lott) suggesting we had been better off if we had followed a segregationist path in this country after all of the battles and fights for civil rights and all the work that we still have to do," said Obama.
He said: "The Republican Party itself has to drive out Trent Lott. If they have to stand for something, they have to stand up and say this is not the person we want representing our party."
--From the December 12, 2002 issue of the Chicago Defender.

Oh I understand what you're saying, and to a certain extent, agree with you.
I just don't think Obama would have had anything to sign (health insurance bill) if it wasn't for Reid/Pelosi. I just happen to think that there is a big gap between Obama's "feel good speeches" and his actual political know-how. He had no administrative knowledge before becoming President, and less than 2 years as a senator.
And there is where Pelosi/Reid comes in. They are his domestic policy buoys.

I am assuming that our President should never vacation and should somehow know exactly when these attempts are made 24-7 and be on call every second of his term. I think that is humanly impossible. When George Bush was informed that the Twin Towers had been attacked, didn't he go back to reading books to children? He didn't know beforehand and you know what, I don't blame him for that because Presidents are human.
Evidently, this issue has been discussed and put to rest by the two men most intimately involved with it so I guess I'm wondering why can't the rest of us do the same thing? I don't condone in any shape or form what Harry Reid said. I do think however, that he never expected this to become such a public issue. Remember Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder's famous faux paux, suggesting that Blacks were better athletes in certain sports because of their better "Bouyancy", and was almost instantly removed from his TV sports job because of it? Some "investigative" reporter had stuck a microphone in Jimmy's face and the rest is history. We all have said things we regret. Sometimes there are no "do-overs" and perhaps Harry Reid will be reminded of his unfortunate gaffe for the rest of his life, but I think there are a lot more important issues than a few prejudiced remarks about why President Obama would have a good chance at re-election because of some perceived racially oriented advantages that Harry Reid mentioned to someone. Let's worry about the economy and the foreign wars we are now in because I think the solutions to those things are much more significant in the long run than whether Reid is a racist or not, and for the record, I really don't think he is. I think he was simply sharing a belief he had about President Obama thast would help him in his re-election bid.

I thought Obama did pretty good in responding within 3 days. When Bush was on his 2 week vacation in 01 during the Shoebomber incident it took him 6 days to make mention of it. Guess he didn't want to be bothered either.
Maybe one day we can have a president who will respond immediately, as neither Democrat nor Republican Presidents seem at all interested in making timely responses to terror attacks.

"Evidently, this issue has been discussed and put to rest by the two men most intimately involved with it so I guess I'm wondering why can't the rest of us do the same thing?"
Because one of the two men is turning out to be a complete hypocrite with respect to racially charged statements, and that man happens to be the POTUS. Do you think Lott should have been treated with the same "kid gloves" with which you're willing to handle Reid, or are you just like the POTUS, that is it depends on what side of political spectrum makes the comment?
Granted there are more pressing issues, but political figures can and IMO should be scrutinized. They work for us. If Reid or anyone else doesn't like the scrutiny, they are free to resign.

I think the President should be out reassuring the American people that day if nothing else that they are doing everything possible to deal with the situation.
I think they should also not be charged in civilian court, as both of these bombers were. Given them the military tribunals.
I don't agree with alot of what Obama does, but he is following the Bush blue-print to a T on how he dealt with the shoebomber so I can't be critical as the Bush/Cheney model of dealing with this proved effective before.

For the record, I was not happy with Trent Lott's reference to the need to go back to a time of segregation and hatred and all the other things associated with "the old" Strom Thurmond. I oppose those kinds of beliefs regardless of who is speaking. I think old Trent was in a spot where he felt like he needed to say something nice about the "old days" and frankly blew it. In the final analysis, what we have are two poeple from opposite sides of the political spectrum who both said incredibly stupid things in public. The way I see it, we can all continue to argue over who is less wrong, or we can act like adults and get past all the rhetoric on both sides, forget about it and move on, with the interests of the country holding sway over who's more right and less wrong between Lott and Reid. No doubt the reason this comes out now is politiically motivated. Reid is trailing in the polls. I'm sure there have been suggestions from within his own party, that he take one for the team and allow another democrat who is more popular the chance to preserve the seat. Reid is arrogant so I doubt he sees it this way.
This move reeks of the democrat party because of its timing. It comes out at a time when there is still opportunity to get someone else on the ballot and put a strong campaign together. If it were the repulicans it would be most advantageous for it to come out in the last couple of weeks of October.

You guys have every right to complain, as i've said numerous times. There is media bias, and i can see it, plain as day, in most things.
But, in this case, i'm not really seeing it from "mainstream" media.
Yea, maybe the commentators/comedians/etc., aren't jumping all over it, but i've been seeing plenty of coverage everywhere else, none of which is making excuses for the comments.
There is bias, yes, but in this instance, i don't think it is huge.

He should just stop.
Though, i do understand his line of reasoning, but just completely disagree with it.
And, Reid may have been praising Obama, but that in turn also says that Reid has dormant racist views, as saying that he's a better candidate because he has "lighter" skin implies that he doesn't think a candidate with "darker" skin is a good candidate.
Reid's views are eerily similar to colonialist views of Africans, of putting "lighter" skinned locals in positions of power, etc. The "more European looking" Africans were viewed as superior. Hell, you could blame that for the Rwandan genocide.
Why can't the Dems just admit that it was a terrible comment, call him out on it, and move on? No sense defending him, IMO.

I think Reid's comments were akin to the comments penned by David Ehrenstein (himself bi-racial by the way) in a Los Angeles Times op ed column of March 19, 2007. if you recall he referred to Obama as "Barack the Magic Negro" (later lampooned and credited to Rush Limbaugh). According to Ehrenstein, the magical Negro is a non threatening black hero in the popular media, usually the cinema, who was invented to ease feelings of white guilt over slavery and racial injustice. He is noble and devoid of sexual motives, and appears suddenly, out of nowhere, to magically solve the problems of white people.
If black and white americans face reality, the truth of the matter is there is some truth to what Reid said. The fact that Obama is a light skinned African American male who speaks in a manner pleasing to white people helped him secure the votes of many white people who would not have been as comfortable voting for someone with a darker complexion or who spoke not as eloquently (in the Limbaugh skit, Al Sharpton).
However, the issue at large is the notion in this country that prejudice and sterotypes are traits only of the right and how the mainstream media and academia perpetuate this myth.

Chris Rock's been sayin the same thing for years. And no, I don't think Senators and Reps should be any different...I don't personally care if they speak as fowly or as offensively as comedians, etc.
I thought Juan Williams on O'Reilly tonight had some good insight on it.

I have to say...I don't think he's gotten a pass on it and I'm tired of hearing about it personally. I'm sure the right will think he should get it way worse and the left will say he's nothing like Trent Lott blah blah. I didn't realize at first that he'd said this and then it was printed in a book. For the most part I agree. In my initial post on this thread I chalked it up to arrogance not any racist intent. I found Juan's comments fair as well. In the next few months, once the "healthcare" bill is settled, I see Harry Reid finding the need to spend more time with his family.

Mostly agreed. In fact, the statement itself was probably factually correct. And if you look at the Reid incident by itself, then yes, he hasn't received a complete pass on it.
It's when you place it next to the Lott episode that the hypocrisy and comparative "pass" become glaringly apparent.

I dont see what the big deal is, Reid is simply practicing his 1st Ammendent right. I think it's ridiculous that no one can make a comment about Obama without being called a racist. If McCain had won, I'm sure people would make jokes about his age, but no one would be called an ageist.

The bottom-line is if a Republican uses the term "Negro" (or similar politically incorrect terminology) regardless of the context in which it was used his or her political career is usually all but finished.
If a Democrat uses it the left - including the African American left - sweep it under the rug and say, "Well, it may have been an unfortunate choice of words but you have to view the use under the context in which it was used"....which of course is the typical hypocritical double standard that pervades the DC political scene.

Correct, and what is particularly important and overlooked is the fact that the left will defend him by saying that his record is one of defending and fighting for blacks etc..etc.... yet it is the very liberal, democrat Great Society programs and the trillions spent thereon that have continued to impoverish and effectively enslave many blacks for decades.
Thus, his remarks are not just racist but when viewed in the context of his actions and those of his party, are also incredibly hypocritical.
Racist/hypocrite/liar .............................. when will the sheeple wake up.

I have one other bone to pick with this issue. When a Conservative has an extramarital affair or some other issue that questions the issue of morality, the Left will chant the issue is hightened by the fact the Republicans are the party of "Family Values".
Well, cant' the same be argued against the Democrats? I mean, they claim to be the champion of minorities in this country. Doesn't any hint of intolerance or a racial slur have greater weight because of this?

The state of Nevada will not re-elect Harry Reid. You can take that to the bank.

A think a lot of the problem with the perceived differing treatment of Lott and Reid, if indeed there is any, comes from stereotypes of Republicans.
We often hear about stereotypes and it has become this "buzz word." But, stereotyping, as a cognitive process, is really just a way for our brains to organize a lot of information in ways that appear to be coherent and coincide with our experience. When we observe Barack Obama, and his voting record, something in our minds, the way we organize information, we expect that deep down, he believes in strong welfare state domestic policies, etc...even though he's consistently talked about cutting taxes and free market economics and cutting the deficit...and so, when he says to Joe the Plumber, "Spread the Wealth Around"; the right comes out of the woodwork to proclaim "Ah Ha, we knew it all along!"
With Trent Lott, we have the general, stereotypical, white Republican bred in southern ground. Deep down, it's believed, just based on experience, that this guy down his gut, this guy might have a racist bone. Then when he says something supposedly racist..."Ah Ha! He's racist! We knew it!"
When Harry Reid says "Negro"; we never saw it coming...this bumbling, harmless, old man who speaks ever so softly and looks so meek certainly can't be a racist. It doesn't mesh well with our preconceived notions that our brain stores away in our unconscious minds to make the organization of every day life easier...so we just let it go by the wayside.

Having lived in the South for 7 years as well as the North, I see what you mean. People assume a white man with a thick Southern drawl is automatically a racist (people also assume they are not as intelligent or well educated but that is another topic for another day). The exceptions to this rule are Jimmy Carter, James Carville and Bill Clinton. Carville is considered too hip, Carter to dorky and Clinton is, of course, our first black president ;)

Lemme guess....Limbaugh says no to any aid.....the 95% Black populatiuon down there is a dead give away.
I wouldn't want the chubby AM dial dude to give away his lunch money.
But Pat Robertson had it right I guess. Haitians made a "pact with the devil".
LOL.

Limbaugh did not say no to any aid. Just aid filtered through the federal beaurocracy. An opinion in which I concure. After all the feds don't have the best record when it comes to the efficient use of our dollars. I would suggest if you have the means to give find a reputable charity and donate.
Oh and by the way Foot, he has lost 80lbs. I think his lunch money would go a long way.
As for Robertson, he thought they said Hades. You don't hear so well in old age. LOL.

What I find disgusting...the 50,000 dead Haitians and the horror of it all. But 50,000 dead Haitians pale in comparison to the human carnage after we bombed the shit out of Baghdad.
There was more death and destruction that March morning in 2003. i noticed that nobody was passing the hat around for these Iraqi women and children.
Oh, my bad...those women and children were hoarding all those WMD.

Precisely.
But, you forget, Arab lives are worth far less than the lives of others.
How fortunate it is for Americans to decide whose lives they are going to care about this week, ignoring the rest that goes around us, a lot of it of are own doing.
Destroying the lives of thousands of innocent civilians in a needless war in Iraq is just as great a tragedy as that taking place in Haiti at the moment.
Both are horrendous, and we should do all we can to help rebuild, Haiti as a result of a natural disaster, and Iraq as a result of our own misguided and bloated and immoral military complex.

The difference here is that all those Iraqi's needed a bomb or 2 too wake them up and show them that they brought this on themselves for standing idle and let a tyrant run their country and lives.
